Cognis introduces new generation transmission lubricant
In today’s global transportation lubricant market, heavy loading and longer maintenance intervals increasingly require lubricants that deliver superior performance in all weather conditions. Focusing on these requirements, German specialty chemicals supplier Cognis now introduces its new Emgard 2979 SAE 50 synthetic transmission lubricant. Being the first lubricant that meets the latest Eaton Transmission specification PS 164.7, this new generation product offers higher efficiency combined with improved economy.
Under the Emgard brand name, Cognis provides truck component manufacturers with various types of custom-designed, ready-to-use high-performance synthetic lubricants for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Cognis’ new Emgard 2979 SAE 50 synthetic transmission lubricant has been approved for Eaton’s newly released PS 164 Revision 7 transmission specification. This new specification boosts required qualifying performance criteria in a variety of areas, especially focusing on improvement of low and high temperature operation and protection against gear and bearing wear. Cognis’ new generation transmission lubricant has been specifically designed to meet and exceed these new specifications.
Outperforming conventional transmission lubricants
The new Emgard lubricant is fully compatible with existing products on the market, but is significantly more economic to use than conventional transmission lubricants. Formulated from a synthetic base stock with a high viscosity index and a low pour point, it provides superior year-round performance in all climatic conditions. The excellent lubricating properties mean less friction and drag in the transmission resulting in a potential for fuel economy.
Emgard SAE 50 also contains an anti-wear additive, as well as rust, oxidation and corrosion inhibitors to protect bearings and synchronizers, reduce component wear and extend transmission life and oil change intervals. The high viscosity index, low pour point and sub-zero fluid flow make gear changes easier in cold weather, and reduce drag and gear wear by ensuring vital transmission components are properly lubricated within a short time of the engine being started. Since it is also highly stable at high temperatures and under severe oxidation and shear conditions, it provides exceptional high-temperature lubrication. As a result, the new lubricant extends drain intervals to as much as 500,000 miles, and makes it possible for original equipment manufacturers to offer their customers a five-year/750,000-mile warranty on transmission components.
Says Jim Casey, Business Director Compounded Lubricants Cognis Corporation: “Today, commercial vehicles have more horsepower and a higher torque, they are heavier, go faster and have a higher loading than ever before. Thus lubricants are needed that provide enhanced transmission protection. Our new Emgard lubricant is yet another example of Cognis having been first to market with an advanced technology that provides customers with exactly the protection they need.”
