Cognis Process Chemicals makes donation to earthquake relief in Pakistan
To assist the relief effort following the devastating earthquake which hit Pakistan on October 8, 2005, Cognis Process Chemicals has made a donation of 7,000 euros to SOS Children’s Villages, a charity which is providing shelter and care for hundreds of women and children left homeless by the disaster.
Comments Dr. Yusuf Aktalay, Group Vice President Process Chemicals: “Cognis Process Chemicals does a lot of business in the affected areas, and because we are involved in the economic life of Pakistan and India, we feel we have an obligation to help. The youngest victims are those who are least able to look after themselves in the face of such a natural disaster, so we decided that donating to SOS Children’s Villages was the most effective contribution we could make.”
The October earthquake has caused loss of life and damage to infrastructure and private property on an unprecedented scale, throughout northern Pakistan and the Kashmir region of India. SOS Children’s Villages is taking care of hundreds of women and children in the affected area. It is working also tirelessly to reunite children with their surviving relatives, and in cases where no such relatives can be traced, the children will be offered long-term care in a family environment at an SOS Children’s Village.
SOS Children’s Villages has been carrying out humanitarian work in Pakistan since 1975 and currently operates seven SOS Children’s Villages, six youth facilities, seven schools, four vocational training centers, four SOS Social Centers and two SOS Medical Centers in the country. The charity has been operating in India since 1964, and now runs 34 Children's Villages and 122 other projects in the country.
