Cognis at the IFSCC 2005: innovative ideas for wellness products

At this year’s IFSCC conference in Florence, Italy, Cognis Care Chemicals and its active ingredients business, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS), exhibited a number of new products and concepts for value-added formulations, in keeping with the event’s theme of “World Wide Wellness”. Among the products Cognis presented were Emulgade? Sucro, a new emulsifying system that delivers an outstanding pleasant skin feel, Plantapon® LC 7, a versatile fruit acid surfactant with moisturizing properties and exceptional mildness, and LS’s new ProDEJine™ LS 9784 anti-wrinkle active ingredient.

Care products that are based on structures well-known from the food area and that combine the benefits of these with a pleasant texture and scent are becoming ever more popular. At the IFSCC, Cognis showcased Emulgade® Sucro, a new emulsifier based on sucrose polystearate, which can be used to give emulsions a velvety and powdery feel during application, and a light, non-sticky afterfeel. Unlike traditional emulsifiers, the product shows shear thinning characteristics, and it also improves spreadability. These qualities make it a key ingredient in facial and body creams, including sun care products, where customers are looking for a nice cushion and a velvety afterfeel.

Personal care products that contain value-added ingredients are continuing to increase in popularity. One such product presented by Cognis at the conference was Plantapon® LC 7, a surfactant combining the benefits of moisturizing fruit acids with a degree of mildness that far surpasses that of traditional surfactants. It is suitable for personal care and baby cleansing formulations such as body and facial washes. Added to hair cleansing formulations, such as shampoos, this citric acid derivative supports hair conditioning and ease hair treatments such as combing. Its 100% active state also makes this liquid surfactant suitable for use in non-aqueous formulations such as shower gels and bath oils.

Consumer demand for products which defy the signs of aging has revitalized the market. LS presented ProDEJine™ LS 9784, a new active ingredient of biotechnological origin, which is isolated and purified from yeast. It protects and regenerates the dermo-epidermal junction, the membrane that anchors the epidermis to the dermis. Clinical tests on ProDEJine™ LS 9784 have shown that it has a pronounced anti-wrinkle effect around the eyes, making it ideal for use in anti-aging face care products and care products for mature skin. LS also provided information about Tricholastyl™ LS 9267, an active ingredient designed to prevent the aging of the scalp, thereby slowing hair loss and helping the hair keep its youthfulness. It achieves this by using an extract of the bark of the Indian kino tree, which is known to reduce glycation. It is suitable for use in both intensive hair loss prevention treatments and in complementary care products such as shampoos and hair tonics.

Competitive advantages in an attractive growth market
The proportion of income spent on beauty products continues to rise: in 2001, the global wellness market, including fitness and health, was worth 200 billion US dollars, and by 2010 it is expected to reach 1,000 billion dollars. Bettina Jackwerth, Global Marketing Director Cognis Skin Care comments: “At Cognis Care Chemicals, we aligned our products and services with the wellness growth trend at an early stage. Our in-depth knowledge of Cognis customers’ markets has enabled us to offer ready-to-market formulations and complete marketing concepts that serve this trend, and will continue to do so, giving our customers a competitive advantage in their markets.”
