PA Reviviscence LS 9562 – natural protection for the skin against environmental stressors
In the modern world, our skin is subjected as never before to environmental stressors. Scenarios such as leaving an air-conditioned building in summer, traveling between countries with very different climates, or entering an overheated shop in winter and then going back out into the cold can all be harmful to the skin, dehydrating it and altering its micro-relief. As a result, there is an increasing demand for skin care products that keep skin moisturized and feeling smooth and soft. To meet the needs of skin care product manufacturers, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS), the active ingredient business of Cognis Care Chemicals, has developed PA Reviviscence® LS 9562, a long-lasting moisturizer based on an extract of Myrothamnus flabellifolia, a plant from the desert areas in South Africa.
The main ingredient of PA Reviviscence is an antioxidant-rich extract of the Myrothamnus flabellifoli, and this is supplemented by oligosaccharides derived from xyloglucans found in tamarind (Tamarindus indica), a plant known for its immunostimulating and moisturizing properties, and trehalose, which also moisturizes and facilitates osmoregulation. LS’s new active ingredient is suitable for use in care products designed for very dry skin and to protect against extreme conditions. Its long-lasting (approximately 24-hour) moisturizing effect also makes it suitable for use in moisturizers with longer than average effectiveness.
Scientifically proven benefits
Efficacy tests showed the moisturizer’s capability to protect the skin against attack from all kinds of stresses, including heat shock, cold shock, osmotic shock and exposure to UVA and UVB radiation. Moreover, in clinical tests against a placebo cream, the product demonstrated significant anti-drying and softening benefits in extreme conditions. A study carried out on 16 female volunteers showed that a cream containing five percent PA Reviviscence had moisturizing, softening and anti-drying properties. In comparison with a placebo cream, the skin's moisture content 30 minutes after application was up to 21 percent higher. A separate one-week test, involving 17 female volunteers in cold weather conditions, also showed its ability to improve skin moisture content, in this case by up to 11 percent.
Solution that copy nature
LS is making use of the unique properties of the Myrothamnus flabellifolia shrub: growing as it does on granitic soil in South Africa, the plant has to contend with both the desert conditions and occasional torrential rain found in the region. In dry conditions, the plant has a defense mechanism that enables it to survive with a greatly reduced water content in a kind of suspended animation. However, as soon as rain falls, the desiccated plant is able to rehydrate very quickly and resume its normal cellular functions, and this is why it is sometimes referred to as a “resurrection plant”.
Natural care ingredients for modern personal care
Drawing on its extensive experience in the field of using natural-source ingredients, LS is able to offer cosmetic manufacturers natural ingredients which add genuine value, and have proven this in extensive testing. This enables LS customers to achieve a distinctive positioning in the personal care market, based on innovative marketing claims that meet consumer needs. “Value-added natural care ingredients are gaining market share because they address consumers’ concerns about the environment and meet their preference for natural products,” says Isabelle Benoit, Marketing Manager LS.
