Arlypon® TT: The turbo thickener that tames surfactants

This high performance thickening agent combines associative and micellar thickener benefits to ensure optimum viscosity for surfactant systems that present a ''thickening'' challenge. Arlypon® TT is suitable for all surfactant based personal care products: shampoos, bath and shower gels, baby and facial products and liquid hand soaps. These systems, whether they are SLES-reduced or completely free of sulfates and betaines, low active matter systems or blends of specific mild and difficult-to-thicken surfactants are tamed by Arlypon® TT.

Arlypon® TT: Product Profile
  • Excellent thickening power in all kind of surfactant systems
  • Very effective even at low surfactant concentration
  • Flexible in use
  • Free of amide/amines and preservatives
  • Easy to handle

  • Positive sensorial effects
  • Good compatibility
  • Cost effective
Arlypon® TT: The synergistic thickener

Micellar and associative thickeners both come with drawbacks. Arlypon® TT (PEG/PPG-120/10 Trimethylolpropane Trioleate (and) Laureth-2) is able to combine the advantages of these two thickening types such as universal suitability for commonly used surfactant based formulations and improved temperature stability.

Thickening Performance for alternative systems

As the “sulfate-free” claim is gaining more interest, formulators are looking for solutions to solve the difficulties of thickening such systems. The thickening performance of Arlypon® TT  was tested in a low active, sulfate-free system. According to the graph, Arlypon® TT  was the only thickener among the tested ones being able to provide a good viscosity profile to the formulation. Other commonly used thickeners of the market could not fulfill their thickening function by using 1%.

Viscosity and temperature behavior

Sufficient viscosity stability even at higher temperatures is a characteristic advantage of micellar thickeners. The following test results show how effective Arlypon® TT supports the stability of pearlized formulations during storage at 40°C.

Arlypon® TT

PEG-200 Hydrogenated
Glyceryl Palmate
(and) PEG-7

Glucose Dioleate

The Arlypon® TT  formulation is the only one being able to stabilize the wax particles even at increased temperatures of 40 °C over 12 weeks time.
During the test the viscosity values of each formulation decreased drastically as was to be expected. However, the remaining viscosity of the Arlypon® TT formulation is still sufficient to provide a pearlized formulation without separation.

Sensorial Benefits

In addition to its synergistic thickening performance, Arlypon® TT is moreover able to provide surfactant based formulations with an improved foam profile and pleasant skin sensorial behavior proven by sensory assessment.

Performance Summary

Arlypon® TT  goes even beyond the typical requirements for thickeners:

  • Excellent thickening power in standard surfactant systems
  • Very effective even at low surfactant concentrations
  • Excellent thickening power in difficult-to-thicken formulations
  • Sufficient viscosity at higher temperature in pearlized formulations
  • Perceivable foam profile improvement
  • Positive sensorial effects
